How we do Shakespeare at Copywork Cave

If you're looking to connect your copywork with your Shakespeare study, Copywork Cave can help. The majority of our 12 week collections feature a weekly exercise copying Shakespeare of some sort - from short quotes to full passages of text and also excerpts from E. Nesbit's Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare. Here you'll find the full run-down on which plays feature in each collection so you can match to your study if desired.

Level 1 - for early writers age 6 - 8

Collection 2 includes some short quotations from William Shakespeare (both Classic and Christian versions are the same in this regard)

Level 2 - for developing writers age 7 - 9

Collections 1-3 features a weekly short excerpt from a different play; sometimes including more than one character.

Collection 1 – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Collection 2 – Twelfth Night and Much Ado About Nothing

Collection 3 – The Tempest

Collection 4 – Quotes from Shakespeare about friendship, anger and life

Collection 5 – All’s Well that Ends Well (Story version by E. Nesbit)

Collection 6 – A Winter’s Tale (Story version by E. Nesbit)

Level 3 - confident writers age 10 - 14

Each collection in Level 3 includes a slightly longer passage from the relevant play.

Collection 1 – Hamlet

Collection 2 – Romeo and Juliet

Collection 3 – Macbeth

Collection 4 – The Merchant of Venice

Collection 5 – The Two Gentlemen of Verona

Collection 6 – The Taming of the Shrew

Why copy Shakespeare?

  1. It exposes us to complex vocabulary

  2. It familiarises children some of his most beautiful and memorable lines

  3. It builds confidence in reading and understanding Shakespeare so children never think "this is too hard"

  4. It helps consolidate learning about the characters and plot of each play
